Full EMAC Review

The content of the book / resource:
The pack comprises guidance for trainers of mentors, organized into 10 modules, each representing about a 75 minute session. The modules are: Introductory- Defining principles and practice of working with ITT students; 1. Understanding the Standards; 2. Improving feedback; 3. Setting Targets; 4. Working collaboratively; 5. Accurate diagnostic and formative assessment; 6. Assessing trainees; 7. The Curriculum; 8. Professional values and practice; 9. Working with trainees.

Its effectiveness in catering for its target audience
The pack is devised to support school-based ITT programmes, especially to prepare for starting up, and assumes a whole-school approach. The introductory module needs to be a whole-school approach and could be used at any time as a review of practice in general. One school used it successfully as a post-Ofsted pick-me-up! The remainder are targeted more specifically – 4 could be used with staff other than the direct mentors; Modules 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7 help prepare mentors to work with trainees; 6 relates to assessment; and 8 and 9 relate to professional issues, when a more senior mentor might be on hand for guidance.

The value to the user
The pack is potentially useful.

Its capacity to support pupils and / or teachers
In the absence of other support, or in combination with other resources such as videos of mentors as models, this is a useful resource for ITT mentors.

Its particular strengths and any weaknesses
The modules are useful, though perhaps too-time-consuming to be used as they stand, and lack exemplars of mentors in action.

Readability, presentation and cost
The guidance is clear, and specific, well-presented and the pack is free!
