Professional Studies: Primary Phase (Second Edition) - Edited by Kate Jacques and Rob Hyland
The content of the book / resource
The book seeks to demystify and explain the broad requirements of the Professional Standards for QTS. It is divided in to four key sections (planning and assessment; management, organisation and delivery; children and individual needs; becoming a professional) and within each section offers a number of chapters all written by professionals who support trainees. The chapters can be read sequentially or individual chapters referred to.Its effectiveness in catering for its target audience
As well as providing very useful guidance and exemplification of professional issues that run across all curriculum areas the book would help trainees reflect upon their own practices, beliefs and principles. The value to the user
Provides clear and concise explanations of key aspects of the Standards with many diagrams and concrete illustrations to support the trainee in their day-to-day work e.g. planning formats. The practical tasks provided within each chapter help the trainee to reflect upon their own practice and apply their knowledge and understanding to work in the classroom/school. This makes it a useful resource for mentors and all those working alongside trainees. At the beginning of each chapter there are clear objectives for the trainee and reference to specific aspects of the Professional Standards for QTS.Its capacity to support students and / or mentors
The book is part of a series of books developed as course material for trainee teachers. As such, specific materials would be an invaluable resource to mentor and tutors who support trainees. Its particular strengths and any weaknesses
Based on the current Professional Standards for Qualified Teacher Status and Requirements for Initial Training (DfES/TTA 2002), this book offers comprehensive coverage of many professional issues. Further reading and useful websites are signposted at the end of each chapter, enabling the reader to pursue key issues in greater detail.Readability, presentation and cost
Text is broken up in to readable chunks under a series of sub-headings with clear explanations and examples provided.Value for money
At £15 this book is very good value for money.
