The Insider’s Guide for New Teachers; Succeed in Training & Induction - Sara Bubb

The content of the book/resource
The book is a step by step guide for the beginning teacher. It is carefully structured to take the aspiring teacher through the application/interview process to the training programme, with advice on attaining the QtT Standards, professional and personal well being , observing and being observed , culminating in the induction year. The material deals with appropriate national and legal frameworks with case study exemplification.

Its effectiveness in catering for its target audience
The information it presents is helpful to intending trainees and NQTs although the sections on training and induction are somewhat simplistic and smack of 'tips for teachers.'

The value to the user
As a general easy access guide it will have its uses. However, it would not really stand alone and will obviously need more theoretical underpinning. However, its 'Top Tips' provide reassurance and helpful exemplification and may, for some trainees, answer questions directly relevant to them.

Its capacity to support students and/or mentors
The book's focus is the trainee teacher and NQT and, as such, not directly relevant to the mentor. However, some of the case studies might enhance a mentor's understanding of a particular issue. It might also encourage the mentor to be more empathetic.

Its particular strengths and any weaknesses
Its strength is its clear structure and coherence of style with helpful exemplification. Its limitations are its cataloguing of complex issues into what is essentially a simplistic guidebook to the training and induction Standards. In fairness to the author and publisher though, it makes no claims to be other than an 'engaging survival guide' with 'handy checklists and useful tips'.

Readability, presentation and cost
It's highly readable and accessible and makes ready contact with the target audience and, as such, presents reasonable value for money.
