A Newly Qualified Teacher’s Manual How to Meet Induction Standards - Sara Bubb

The content of the book / resource
The book deals systematically with the feelings, obstacles and issues which typically characterise induction year. Anecdotal evidence as well as more scientifically gathered data and case studies are presented to the reader to illuminate and develop responses to the Induction Standards and the challenges associated with the early stages of teaching. Advice on statutory rights and responsibilities and routine professional and management challenges is clearly and realistically presented. Unusually the text moves beyond the confines of England and briefly addresses Wales’ End of Induction Standards and Scotland’s Standards for Full Registration.

Its effectiveness in catering for its target audience
The manual accurately identifies first teaching post challenges and concerns and systematically offers strategies for managing and minimising them. Its reassuring tone is likely to be appreciated by the NQT by reducing any sense of personal and professional isolation and offering manageable strategies to relieve pressure.

The value to the user
Its easily accessible format and clear succinct guidance make it a useful manual and one which is best accessed on a ‘need to know’ basis rather than read in its entirety in one go.

Its capacity to support students and / or mentors
As has been indicated, the manual will prove to be an extremely useful reference point for the NQT and one which is likely to be accessed on a regular basis eg to reinforce management and lesson planning strategies encountered in training, as an aide memoire for induction entitlement or merely for reassurance at low points. Mentors may find some aspects of the factual reminders about induction entitlement and requirements helpful.

Its particular strengths and any weaknesses
The book’s strengths lie in its ability to live up to its title and blurb promises in a straightforward and accurate way. It doesn’t pretend to be the induction year panacea or suggest that all will run smoothly. Rather by acknowledging that teaching is characterised by highs and lows and offering suggestions which ultimately should result in a preponderance of the former it is gently and realistically reassuring. The abundance of case studies enhance the guidance and will presumably strike a note with many readers.

Readability, presentation and cost
The book’s content, style and format make for easy and engaging reading. As a manual which can be usefully consulted throughout induction year it represents good value for money.
