Full EMAC Review

The content of the book / resource
The 120 pages focus upon the NQT induction process, comprising an overview of roles and responsibilities, including a job specification; how to prepare for mentoring, including a focus upon learning styles; providing monitoring and support, including case studies; making formal assessments; and cases studies of 1 secondary, 1 special school and 3 primary NQTs.

Its effectiveness in catering for its target audience
It is clearly well-informed by research and experience of practice, including useful references, quotes from NQTs, and case study exemplars.

The value to the user
This book focuses upon NQT induction, but can be useful for mentoring the induction of other newly-appointed staff, and chapter 3, on mentoring and support, would eb relevant to mentoring and coaching of colleagues where that involved classroom observation.

Its capacity to support students and / or mentors
The focus is very specifically upon the process of being an induction mentor.

Its particular strengths and any weaknesses
The book is slightly dated – referring to the 4/98 standards and the CEP, rather than the CEDP, and to the 2000 assessment profile, instead of the 2003 revised version.
However, these are details quickly corrected by reference to current guidelines, and the book is about the process of being an induction mentor, which applies regardless of these detail changes.

Readability, presentation and cost
The text is well presented, with useful diagrams and tables and, at £12.99 presents good value for money.
